History of the Original Aircraft

The Xian FBC-1 Flying Leopard, also known by its Chinese designation JH-7, is a twin-engine, two-seat fighter-bomber developed by the Xi'an Aircraft Industry Corporation for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and later the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). It was designed to replace older strike aircraft with a modern platform capable of carrying out long-range maritime strike, ground attack, and interdiction missions.

Development of the aircraft began during the 1970s as China sought an indigenous strike aircraft with improved range, payload, and all-weather capability. After an extended development programme, the prototype made its maiden flight in 1988, with operational service beginning during the 1990s. The aircraft was publicly revealed during the 1999 National Day military parade in Beijing, marking China's growing capability to design and manufacture advanced combat aircraft.

Powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey Mk.202 turbofan engines, later replaced by licence-built WS-9 Qinling engines, the Flying Leopard is capable of speeds approaching Mach 1.7 while carrying a substantial weapons load. Its large internal fuel capacity and ability to carry external tanks provide the long range required for maritime strike operations.

Designed primarily for anti-ship warfare, the FBC-1 can carry a wide variety of guided and unguided weapons, including anti-ship missiles, precision-guided bombs, rockets, and air-to-air missiles for self-defence. Its advanced radar and navigation systems allow the aircraft to operate effectively in all weather conditions and at low altitude.

An improved version, the JH-7A, introduced strengthened wings, additional weapon hardpoints, upgraded avionics, and increased use of composite materials. These enhancements significantly improved combat capability and operational flexibility, allowing the aircraft to perform precision strike missions against both naval and land targets.

Today, the Flying Leopard continues to serve with Chinese naval and air force units as an important long-range strike aircraft. Although newer combat aircraft are gradually entering service, the JH-7 family remains a significant part of China's tactical strike capability.
