History of the Original Aircraft

The CAIC WZ-10 Thunderbolt, also known as the Z-10, is China's first purpose-built modern attack helicopter and was developed to provide the People's Liberation Army with a dedicated platform for anti-armour warfare, battlefield support, and precision strike missions. Designed as a rival to Western attack helicopters such as the AH-64 Apache, the WZ-10 introduced advanced attack helicopter capabilities to Chinese military aviation.

Development of the WZ-10 began during the 1990s as China sought to modernise its helicopter forces and move away from modified utility helicopters used in armed roles. The project involved China's 602nd Aircraft Design Institute, the China Helicopter Research and Development Institute, and the Changhe Aircraft Industries Corporation (CAIC). The first prototype flew in 2003, with the helicopter entering service with the People's Liberation Army Ground Force Aviation in 2009.

The WZ-10 features a modern attack helicopter layout with a tandem two-seat cockpit, allowing the pilot and weapons systems officer to operate independently during combat missions. Its narrow fuselage, armour protection, advanced sensors, and electronic systems were designed to improve survivability while operating close to enemy forces.

Powered by two WZ-9 turboshaft engines, the helicopter is capable of carrying a range of weapons including anti-tank guided missiles, air-to-air missiles, rockets, and a chin-mounted cannon. Its primary mission is destroying armoured vehicles and providing close air support for ground forces, although it also has limited air-to-air combat capability.

The WZ-10 has become a key component of China's modern military aviation capability and continues to receive upgrades to improve its engines, armour protection, sensors, and combat effectiveness. It represents a significant milestone in China's development of indigenous combat helicopter technology.
