History of the Original Aircraft

The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk entered service with the United States Army in 1979, replacing the ageing UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) as the Army's primary utility helicopter. Designed for maximum versatility, the Black Hawk was built to transport troops, deliver supplies, conduct medical evacuations and support combat operations in a wide variety of environments.

Powered by twin turboshaft engines and equipped with advanced avionics, the UH-60 offered greater speed, payload capacity and survivability than its predecessor. Its robust design enabled it to operate in extreme climates ranging from deserts to mountainous and arctic regions, making it a valuable asset for military forces around the world.

The External Stores Support System (ESSS) further expanded the Black Hawk's capabilities by allowing it to carry external fuel tanks, weapons or additional mission equipment on stub wings mounted to either side of the fuselage. This significantly increased the aircraft's operational range and flexibility during long-range transport, special operations and combat support missions.

For operations in snow-covered and icy terrain, specialised ski landing gear could be fitted to improve performance when landing on soft snow or frozen surfaces. This configuration proved particularly useful during arctic training exercises, mountain operations and humanitarian missions in remote winter environments.

Today, the UH-60 Black Hawk continues to serve with armed forces across the globe and has become one of the most recognisable and successful military helicopters ever built, renowned for its reliability, adaptability and outstanding operational record.
