History of the Original Vehicle

The M36 Tank Destroyer, officially designated the 90mm Gun Motor Carriage M36, was introduced by the United States in 1944 to counter the increasingly heavy German tanks encountered in Europe. Built on the proven chassis of the M10A1 tank destroyer, the M36 combined excellent mobility with the formidable 90mm M3 gun, giving Allied forces a much-needed weapon capable of defeating Panthers, Tigers and other heavily armoured vehicles.

The M36 retained the open-topped turret design used on earlier American tank destroyers, providing excellent visibility for the crew and allowing rapid target acquisition. Its powerful 90mm gun offered significantly greater armour penetration than the 76.2mm weapons fitted to earlier M10 vehicles, making it one of the most effective Allied anti-tank vehicles of the war.

Entering combat during the final months of 1944, the M36 served extensively in France, Belgium, Germany and during the Battle of the Bulge, where its firepower proved invaluable against German armoured counterattacks. It was often deployed alongside Sherman tanks, providing long-range anti-tank support while remaining capable of engaging fortified positions with high-explosive ammunition.

Following the Second World War, the M36 continued to serve with the U.S. Army and many allied nations. It saw further action during the Korean War and remained in military service around the world for decades, demonstrating the effectiveness and longevity of its design.

Today, the M36 is recognised as one of the finest Allied tank destroyers of the Second World War. Its combination of mobility, reliability and outstanding firepower made it a formidable battlefield opponent and an important milestone in the evolution of American armoured warfare.
