The U.S. 2.5 Ton 6x6 Cargo Truck was one of the most important transport vehicles used by Allied forces during the Second World War. Produced in vast numbers under the GMC CCKW programme, these trucks became a vital part of the Allied logistics network, transporting troops, ammunition, fuel, food and equipment across multiple theatres of war.

Developed with a six-wheel-drive configuration, the CCKW was designed to provide excellent mobility across difficult terrain while carrying a payload of up to 2.5 tons. Its rugged construction, reliable engine and simple maintenance requirements made it ideal for the demanding conditions of wartime operations.

The truck was produced in several configurations, including open and closed cab versions, long and short wheelbases, and variants fitted with specialised equipment such as fuel tankers, wreckers and workshop bodies. The standard cargo version was among the most common, providing essential transport support for advancing Allied armies.

More than 560,000 CCKW trucks were produced during the war, making it one of the most numerous military vehicles ever manufactured. They served with distinction in campaigns across North Africa, Italy, North-West Europe and the Pacific, where their reliability helped maintain the constant flow of supplies required for large-scale military operations.

Perhaps most famously, thousands of these trucks were used during the Allied advance following the D-Day landings, where they formed the backbone of the famous "Red Ball Express" supply network that kept frontline units supplied as they pushed through France.

Today, the GMC CCKW is recognised as one of the most important support vehicles of the Second World War. While it lacked the fame of tanks and aircraft, its contribution to Allied victory was immense, proving that effective logistics were just as important as combat power.
