The U.S. 2 1/2-Ton 6x6 Cargo Truck was one of the most important logistical vehicles used by American and Allied forces during the Second World War. Best known through the GMC CCKW family, the 2 1/2-ton truck was designed to transport troops, ammunition, fuel, food and equipment across both established roads and difficult battlefield terrain.

Its 6x6 drivetrain provided excellent mobility and allowed the truck to operate in conditions where conventional civilian vehicles would struggle. The standard cargo configuration featured a large rear load bed capable of carrying approximately 2 1/2 tons of supplies under cross-country conditions, although considerably heavier loads were often transported on good roads.

The truck served across virtually every major theatre of the war, including North Africa, Italy, North-West Europe and the Pacific. Its reliability and versatility made it indispensable to the enormous logistical network required to support rapidly advancing Allied armies.

One of its most famous roles came following the D-Day landings in Normandy. Thousands of 2 1/2-ton trucks participated in the Red Ball Express, the vast road transport operation established to move fuel, ammunition, food and other supplies from the Normandy beachheads to Allied forces advancing rapidly across France.

More than half a million GMC CCKW trucks were produced during the Second World War, alongside other American vehicles of the same payload class. Numerous specialised versions were also developed, including tankers, dump trucks, workshop vehicles and recovery variants.

The 2 1/2-ton 6x6 became a symbol of Allied wartime logistics and continued to serve with military forces around the world long after 1945. Although less celebrated than the tanks and aircraft it supported, its contribution to keeping Allied armies supplied made it one of the most significant military vehicles of the Second World War.
