The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX entered service with the Royal Air Force in 1942 as a direct response to the introduction of the formidable German Focke-Wulf Fw 190. By fitting the proven Spitfire airframe with the more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 engine, engineers created a fighter capable of restoring the RAF's advantage in the skies over Europe.

The Mk.IX combined outstanding speed, climb rate and manoeuvrability with the superb handling characteristics that had made the Spitfire famous. Armed with two 20mm Hispano cannons and either four .303 Browning machine guns or, on later aircraft, two .50 calibre machine guns, it proved highly effective against both enemy fighters and bombers.

Serving with the Royal Air Force and numerous Allied air forces, the Spitfire Mk.IX saw action across Europe, the Mediterranean and the Far East. It played a vital role in escorting Allied bombers, intercepting Luftwaffe aircraft and supporting ground operations before and after the D-Day landings. Its exceptional versatility also allowed it to undertake fighter sweeps, reconnaissance missions and ground-attack operations throughout the remainder of the war.

More than 5,500 Mk.IX aircraft were produced, making it one of the most numerous and successful Spitfire variants ever built. Its outstanding combat performance ensured it remained in frontline service until the end of the Second World War, securing its reputation as one of the greatest fighter aircraft in aviation history.
