The Sd.Kfz.140 Flakpanzer 38(t) Gepard was a German self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle developed during the Second World War to provide mobile air defence for armoured and mechanised units. Based on the reliable Czechoslovak-designed Panzer 38(t) chassis, it was created as part of Germany's effort to protect frontline formations from increasing Allied air superiority.

Introduced in 1943, the Flakpanzer 38(t) mounted a 2cm FlaK 38 anti-aircraft cannon in an open-topped fighting compartment. The weapon offered a high rate of fire and was effective against low-flying aircraft, particularly fighter-bombers attacking German armoured columns. It could also be used against lightly armoured vehicles and infantry when required.

The use of the Panzer 38(t) chassis provided excellent mechanical reliability and allowed the vehicle to share components with other German armoured vehicles already in service. However, its lightly protected open fighting compartment left the crew vulnerable, and the 20mm gun became increasingly less effective as Allied aircraft became faster and more heavily protected.

Approximately 140 Flakpanzer 38(t) vehicles were produced between 1943 and 1944. They were issued primarily to armoured divisions on the Eastern Front and later saw action during the fighting in Normandy and the defence of Germany. Despite being produced in limited numbers, they provided valuable close-range air defence during a period when German forces faced growing Allied air dominance.

Today, the Flakpanzer 38(t) Gepard remains a fascinating example of German wartime engineering, combining an existing armoured chassis with a practical anti-aircraft solution. Its unusual appearance and historical significance have made it a popular subject among WWII vehicle modellers and military enthusiasts.
