The T-34/76 Model 1941 was one of the most significant armoured fighting vehicles of the Second World War and played a decisive role in the Soviet Union's defence against the German invasion. Developed during the late 1930s under the direction of Mikhail Koshkin, the T-34 entered service in 1940 and quickly demonstrated a combination of firepower, mobility and protection that surpassed many contemporary tank designs.

The Model 1941 variant was armed with a 76.2mm F-34 gun, capable of defeating most German tanks encountered during the early years of the war. Combined with its wide tracks, powerful diesel engine and well-sloped armour, the T-34 could traverse difficult terrain while offering excellent protection against enemy anti-tank weapons. Its innovative sloped armour design significantly increased effective armour thickness without adding excessive weight, influencing tank development around the world for decades to come.

When Operation Barbarossa began in June 1941, German forces were surprised by the T-34's effectiveness. The tank's armour proved difficult for many German anti-tank guns to penetrate, while its mobility allowed Soviet crews to operate effectively in the harsh conditions of the Eastern Front. Although early production vehicles suffered from mechanical issues and limited crew visibility, continuous improvements ensured the T-34 remained an increasingly formidable battlefield weapon.

More than 80,000 T-34s of all variants were produced during the war, making it one of the most-produced tanks in history. The T-34/76 formed the backbone of Soviet armoured forces during critical battles such as Moscow, Stalingrad and Kursk, before later being supplemented by the more heavily armed T-34/85.

Today, the T-34 is widely regarded as one of the most successful and influential tanks ever built. Its combination of simplicity, reliability and battlefield effectiveness helped shape the outcome of the Second World War and influenced armoured vehicle design for generations.
