History of the Original Aircraft

Historical Snapshot

The British Aerospace Sea Harrier FRS.1 was developed for the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm as a naval adaptation of the successful Harrier vertical/short take-off and landing (V/STOL) aircraft. Entering service in 1980, the Sea Harrier provided the Royal Navy with a highly capable fleet defence fighter that could operate from aircraft carriers without the need for large conventional catapults or arrestor systems.

Based on the Harrier design, the Sea Harrier featured a redesigned forward fuselage with an advanced Ferranti Blue Fox radar system, improved avionics and navalised components to withstand carrier operations. Its ability to perform vertical take-offs and landings made it particularly valuable for maritime operations, where runway space was limited.

The aircraft's greatest moment came during the Falklands War in 1982, where Sea Harrier FRS.1s operated from Royal Navy aircraft carriers HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible. Despite facing long-range missions, challenging weather conditions and a capable Argentine air force, the Sea Harrier achieved significant success in air combat. Equipped with AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles and supported by excellent manoeuvrability, the aircraft played a crucial role in protecting the British task force.

During the conflict, Sea Harriers provided air defence, conducted ground attack missions and helped establish air superiority over the Falkland Islands. Their performance demonstrated the effectiveness of V/STOL aircraft in modern naval warfare and cemented the Sea Harrier's reputation as one of the most successful naval fighters of its era.

The FRS.1 was later replaced by the improved Sea Harrier FRS.2, but the original aircraft remains an iconic symbol of British naval aviation. Its unique capabilities, distinctive appearance and combat record have made it a favourite subject among aviation enthusiasts and scale modellers.
