History of the Original Vehicle

The Westland Lynx HAS.2 was a naval utility and anti-submarine helicopter developed for the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm during the Cold War. Designed and manufactured by Westland Helicopters, the Lynx was created as a highly capable multi-role aircraft able to operate from warships and perform missions including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, search and rescue, and maritime reconnaissance.

The HAS.2 was the first major production naval variant of the Lynx for the Royal Navy and entered service in the late 1970s. It was designed to replace older naval helicopters by offering improved speed, agility, and sensor capability. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Gem turboshaft engines, the Lynx was one of the fastest helicopters of its era and featured a distinctive four-bladed rotor system that provided excellent performance in maritime environments.

In its anti-submarine role, the Lynx HAS.2 could carry equipment such as dipping sonar systems, torpedoes, and depth charges, allowing it to hunt and engage enemy submarines independently or as part of a wider naval task force. It could also be equipped with Sea Skua anti-ship missiles, giving the aircraft an effective capability against surface vessels.

The Lynx gained international recognition during the Falklands War in 1982, where Royal Navy Lynx helicopters were used extensively for reconnaissance, transport, and anti-surface warfare missions. Their speed, manoeuvrability, and ability to operate from smaller naval vessels made them an essential part of British maritime operations.

The Westland Lynx became one of Britain's most successful military helicopter designs, serving with the Royal Navy and numerous international operators for decades. Its combination of speed, versatility, and naval capability established it as an iconic aircraft of modern British aviation history.
