The Panzerkampfwagen V Panther Ausf.D was the first production version of Germany's famous Panther medium tank and was developed as a direct response to the Soviet T-34 and KV-1 tanks encountered during the early stages of the Eastern Front. Designed to combine firepower, protection and mobility, the Panther became one of the most advanced tank designs of the Second World War.

Entering operational service in 1943, the Panther Ausf.D featured the powerful 7.5cm KwK 42 L/70 high-velocity gun, which provided excellent armour penetration and allowed it to engage enemy tanks at long distances. Its heavily sloped frontal armour significantly improved protection compared with earlier German designs, while the Maybach V12 engine provided strong mobility for a vehicle weighing around 45 tonnes.

The Panther's first major combat deployment came during Operation Citadel, the German offensive at Kursk in July 1943. Although early vehicles suffered from mechanical reliability issues and production problems, the Panther's impressive firepower and armour protection quickly earned it a formidable reputation when operating effectively.

Following improvements to reliability, Panther Ausf.D tanks served extensively on the Eastern Front, as well as later campaigns in Italy, France and the defence of Germany. The design continued to evolve through later variants, including the Ausf.A and Ausf.G, which introduced further improvements to reliability and battlefield performance.

Around 6,000 Panther tanks of all variants were produced during the war. Despite arriving too late to influence the overall outcome of the conflict, the Panther remains widely regarded as one of the most capable medium tanks of the Second World War and continues to be a favourite subject among military historians and scale modellers.
