History of the Original Aircraft

Historical Snapshot

The Lockheed Hudson originated from the civilian Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra and was developed after the British Purchasing Commission approached American manufacturers in 1938 seeking a suitable maritime patrol aircraft. Lockheed adapted the airliner for military service, adding features including a glazed nose for the navigator and bomb aimer. Britain subsequently placed an initial order for 200 aircraft, making the Hudson the first American-built aircraft ordered for RAF service during the period leading into the Second World War.

Despite its civilian origins, the Hudson proved remarkably adaptable. It served extensively with RAF Coastal Command, undertaking maritime reconnaissance, anti-submarine patrols, convoy escort and bombing missions. Hudsons patrolled enormous areas of ocean, searching for German U-boats and surface vessels while helping to protect the shipping routes vital to Britain's war effort.

The Hudson Mk.III, introduced in 1940, was powered by two 1,200 hp Wright Cyclone radial engines. This version also incorporated additional defensive armament, including a retractable ventral gun position intended to provide protection against attacks from below and behind.

Hudsons served far beyond the waters surrounding Britain. They operated from bases across the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific, and were flown by several Allied air forces. The type was also employed for transport, training and clandestine operations, including missions supporting resistance movements in occupied Europe.

Although newer purpose-designed aircraft gradually replaced the Hudson in frontline duties, its versatility ensured continued service in secondary roles. Its combination of range, reliability and adaptability made it an important Allied aircraft during the early and middle years of the war and established the Hudson as one of Lockheed's most significant early military aircraft.
