History of the Original Vehicle

The JGSDF Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) was developed in the early 2000s to provide the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) with a fast, highly mobile armoured vehicle capable of carrying out reconnaissance, patrol and security missions. Manufactured by Komatsu, the vehicle entered service in 2002 and was designed to meet the changing operational requirements of Japan's modern defence forces.

Built on a compact four-wheel-drive chassis, the LAV combines high road speed with excellent off-road capability, making it well suited to operating across a variety of terrain. Its armoured hull provides protection against small-arms fire and shell splinters, while its relatively lightweight design allows for rapid deployment and transport by air.

Typically operated by a crew of four, the vehicle can be fitted with a variety of weapons, including a 5.56mm or 7.62mm machine gun, or a 12.7mm heavy machine gun, depending on the mission. Although primarily intended for reconnaissance and internal security duties, the LAV has also been used for peacekeeping operations, disaster relief and the protection of military installations.

The JGSDF Light Armoured Vehicle has been deployed on international peacekeeping missions, including operations in Iraq, where it was used to provide security and convoy protection for Japanese personnel. Its reliability, mobility and versatility have made it an important component of Japan's modern ground forces.

Today, the Komatsu LAV remains in service with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and continues to support a wide range of domestic and overseas operations. Its compact design and proven performance have established it as one of the most recognisable modern military vehicles in Japanese service.
