History of the Original Vehicle
The Merkava Mk IV is the latest production version of Israel's indigenous main battle tank family, developed to meet the unique operational requirements of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Designed around the principles of crew protection, survivability, and battlefield versatility, the Merkava differs from many conventional tank designs through its emphasis on defensive capability and crew safety.
The Merkava Mk IV entered service in 2004 and incorporated major improvements over earlier variants, including enhanced armour protection, a more powerful engine, advanced electronics, and improved fire control systems.
