The Hawker Hurricane Mk.I was one of the Royal Air Force's most important fighter aircraft during the early years of the Second World War. Designed by Sir Sydney Camm, the Hurricane first flew in 1935 and entered RAF service in 1937, becoming the RAF's first monoplane fighter capable of exceeding 300 mph.

Although often overshadowed by the Supermarine Spitfire, the Hurricane formed the backbone of RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain in 1940. Its strong construction, stable handling and ease of maintenance allowed it to be produced in large numbers and quickly repaired after combat. Armed with eight .303 Browning machine guns mounted in its wings, the Mk.I proved highly effective against German bombers and fighters alike.

During the Battle of Britain, Hurricane squadrons were responsible for destroying more enemy aircraft than all other British air defences combined. While Spitfires often engaged the Luftwaffe's fighter escorts, Hurricanes concentrated on attacking bomber formations, playing a decisive role in preventing a German invasion of Britain.

The Hurricane continued to serve throughout the war in a variety of roles, including night fighting, ground attack, convoy protection and operations across North Africa, the Mediterranean, the Soviet Union and the Far East. Its reliability, versatility and combat success secured its place as one of the most significant Allied aircraft of the Second World War and a lasting symbol of Britain's wartime resilience.
