History of the Original Vehicle

The Sd.Kfz.186 Jagdtiger was the heaviest armoured fighting vehicle to enter series production during the Second World War. Developed on the chassis of the Tiger II, it was designed as a dedicated heavy tank destroyer capable of destroying any Allied tank at extreme range. Entering service in 1944, the Jagdtiger mounted the formidable 12.8cm PaK 44 L/55 anti-tank gun, one of the most powerful weapons ever fitted to an operational armoured vehicle. Its immense firepower allowed it to penetrate virtually every Allied tank armour in service long before the enemy could return effective fire.

The Henschel production version utilised the standard Tiger II suspension with nine overlapping steel road wheels on each side, replacing the earlier Porsche suspension design. This configuration proved more reliable and became the primary production standard. Protected by up to 250mm of frontal armour, the Jagdtiger was almost impervious to frontal attack. However, its enormous weight of over 70 tonnes placed considerable strain on its drivetrain, leading to frequent mechanical failures and limiting its operational mobility.

Despite these shortcomings, the Jagdtiger was a fearsome battlefield opponent when deployed effectively. It served with heavy anti-tank battalions during the final months of the war, seeing action on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, including the defence of Germany in 1945. Although only around 80 examples were completed before the war ended, the Jagdtiger remains one of the most impressive and recognisable armoured fighting vehicles ever built, symbolising Germany's pursuit of overwhelming firepower during the closing stages of the conflict.
