History of the Original Vehicle

The Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) was a Czechoslovak-designed light tank that became an important part of Germany's armoured forces during the early years of the Second World War. Originally developed by Českomoravská Kolben-Daněk (ČKD) as the LT vz. 38, the vehicle was adopted by Germany following the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939 and redesignated as the Pz.Kpfw. 38(t).

The Ausf.E/F variants represented improved production versions of the vehicle, featuring enhanced armour protection compared with earlier models. Additional armour plates were added to the hull and turret to increase survivability against small-calibre anti-tank weapons, while retaining the excellent reliability and mechanical performance that made the design valuable to German forces.

Armed with the 37mm KwK 38(t) L/47.8 gun, the Panzer 38(t) was capable of engaging early-war armoured vehicles and provided effective support for infantry and reconnaissance operations. Its reliable chassis, spacious layout, and strong mechanical design also made it an excellent foundation for later vehicles, including the famous Marder III tank destroyer and Grille self-propelled gun.

The Pz.Kpfw. 38(t) served extensively during Germany's campaigns in Poland, France, the Balkans, and the early stages of Operation Barbarossa against the Soviet Union. Although eventually outclassed by newer tanks, it remained in frontline service due to its reliability and was used throughout the war in various roles.

The Panzer 38(t) remains one of the most successful pre-war European tank designs, demonstrating the quality of Czechoslovak engineering and its significant contribution to German armoured operations during World War II.
