History of the Original Vehicle

Historical Snapshot

The 7.5cm Panzerabwehrkanone 40 (Pak40/L46) was Germany's principal anti-tank gun during the latter half of the Second World War. Developed by Rheinmetall and introduced into service in late 1941, it was designed to counter increasingly well-armoured Allied and Soviet tanks that had rendered earlier anti-tank guns less effective.

Armed with a high-velocity 75mm L/46 gun, the Pak40 offered exceptional armour penetration and was capable of defeating virtually all Allied tanks encountered during the war, including the Soviet T-34, American M4 Sherman and, at favourable ranges, even the heavily armoured Churchill. Firing armour-piercing, high-explosive and specialised ammunition, it proved to be an extremely versatile battlefield weapon.

Although weighing over 1,400 kilograms in action, the Pak40 could still be towed by half-tracks, trucks or artillery tractors and was deployed extensively by German infantry and anti-tank units. Its low silhouette made it easier to conceal in prepared defensive positions, where crews could ambush advancing enemy armour with devastating effect.

The Pak40 saw service on every major front, including the Eastern Front, North Africa, Italy and Western Europe. It became the backbone of Germany's anti-tank defences from 1942 onwards and was also mounted on numerous self-propelled vehicles, including the Marder, Jagdpanzer IV and Hetzer, further extending its effectiveness.

More than 23,000 Pak40 guns were produced, making it one of the most widely manufactured anti-tank guns of the Second World War. Its outstanding combination of firepower, reliability and battlefield effectiveness earned it a reputation as one of the finest towed anti-tank guns ever built.
