History of the Original Vehicle

The 3.7cm Panzerabwehrkanone 35/36 (Pak35/36) was Germany's standard anti-tank gun at the outbreak of the Second World War. Developed by Rheinmetall during the 1930s, it was designed to provide infantry units with a lightweight, highly mobile weapon capable of engaging enemy armoured vehicles.

Armed with a 37mm high-velocity gun, the Pak35/36 proved highly effective during the early campaigns in Poland and France, where it was capable of defeating the armour of most contemporary tanks. Its relatively low weight allowed it to be easily towed by light vehicles or even repositioned manually by its crew, making it a flexible and dependable battlefield weapon.

However, during the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, the Pak35/36 struggled against heavily armoured tanks such as the T-34 and KV-1, earning it the nickname "Heeresanklopfgerät" or "Army Door Knocker" among German troops. To improve its effectiveness, crews were issued with specialised Stielgranate 41 shaped-charge ammunition, which increased its ability to penetrate thicker armour at short range.

Although it was gradually replaced by more powerful anti-tank guns such as the 5cm Pak38 and later the 7.5cm Pak40, the Pak35/36 continued to serve throughout the war in secondary roles, including infantry support, training and use by airborne and occupation units.

Today, the Pak35/36 is remembered as one of the most iconic anti-tank guns of the early Second World War. Its simple design, reliability and widespread use make it an enduring symbol of Germany's early-war anti-tank capability.
