History of the Original Aircraft

The Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet is the principal carrier-based multirole fighter of the United States Navy and one of the most capable combat aircraft operating today. Developed from the earlier F/A-18 Hornet, the Super Hornet is substantially larger than its predecessor, with greater range, increased payload capacity, improved survivability, and more advanced avionics.

The programme began during the early 1990s as the U.S. Navy sought a single aircraft capable of replacing several ageing types, including the F-14 Tomcat, A-6 Intruder, and older F/A-18C/D Hornets. The F/A-18E first flew in 1995 and entered operational service in 1999, quickly becoming the backbone of U.S. Navy carrier air wings.

Powered by two General Electric F414-GE-400 afterburning turbofan engines, the Super Hornet is capable of speeds approaching Mach 1.8 while carrying an extensive range of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons. Its digital fly-by-wire flight controls, advanced radar systems, and modern electronic warfare suite provide exceptional flexibility across a wide variety of combat missions.

The F/A-18E is designed to perform numerous roles, including air superiority, fleet air defence, precision strike, close air support, suppression of enemy air defences (SEAD), maritime strike, reconnaissance, and aerial refuelling. It can carry a wide selection of weapons including AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-120 AMRAAM, AGM-88 HARM, AGM-84 Harpoon, JDAM precision-guided bombs, laser-guided bombs, and unguided munitions.

The Super Hornet has seen extensive operational service in conflicts including Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, operations against ISIS, and numerous carrier deployments around the world. Its reliability, versatility, and combat effectiveness have made it one of the world's leading naval strike fighters.

Although the F-35C Lightning II is gradually entering U.S. Navy service, the F/A-18E Super Hornet continues to play a central role in carrier aviation and is expected to remain in frontline service for many years through ongoing upgrades and modernisation programmes.
