History of the Original Aircraft
Historical Snapshot
The Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II is the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II family, developed as part of the multinational Joint Strike Fighter programme. Designed to replace a variety of ageing combat aircraft, including the AV-8B Harrier II and Sea Harrier, the F-35B combines stealth technology, advanced sensors and multirole capability in a single aircraft.
Entering operational service during the 2010s, the F-35B is uniquely equipped with a shaft-driven lift fan and a swivelling rear engine nozzle, enabling it to take off from short runways and amphibious assault ships, as well as perform vertical landings. This capability allows the aircraft to operate from locations where conventional fighter aircraft cannot, making it an invaluable asset for expeditionary and naval operations.
The aircraft is capable of carrying out a wide range of missions, including air superiority, close air support, reconnaissance, electronic warfare and precision strike operations. Its advanced sensor fusion system provides pilots with an unparalleled view of the battlespace by combining information from onboard sensors and external sources into a single, integrated display.
The F-35B serves with several air arms around the world, including the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, United States Marine Corps, Italian Navy and Japanese Air Self-Defense Force. It operates from aircraft such as the Royal Navy's Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers, providing a significant enhancement to modern carrier strike capability.
As one of the most technologically advanced fighter aircraft ever produced, the F-35B represents the future of tactical air power and continues to play a key role in the defence strategies of allied nations across the globe.
Please Note
