The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle was developed in response to the United States Air Force's requirement for a dedicated air superiority fighter capable of defeating emerging Soviet aircraft designs during the Cold War. First flown in 1972, the F-15 entered USAF service in 1976 and quickly established itself as one of the most capable fighter aircraft in the world.

Designed around the principle of achieving and maintaining air dominance, the F-15 combined exceptional speed, manoeuvrability, advanced radar systems and a powerful weapons load. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney F100 turbofan engines, the aircraft could exceed Mach 2.5 and possessed a remarkable climb rate, allowing it to engage enemy aircraft at a wide range of altitudes and distances.

The F-15C Eagle was introduced in the early 1980s as an improved single-seat air superiority variant. It featured increased internal fuel capacity, upgraded avionics and improved combat capability compared with earlier F-15A models. Armed primarily with AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, along with an internal M61 Vulcan cannon, the F-15C became the backbone of USAF air defence for decades.

Throughout its operational career, the F-15 achieved an exceptional combat record, with more than 100 confirmed air-to-air victories and no air combat losses in its fighter role. It saw extensive combat during operations including the Gulf War, where it proved highly effective against Iraqi aircraft.

The F-15 Eagle continues to serve with air forces around the world and remains one of the most respected fighter aircraft ever produced. Its combination of speed, range, firepower and reliability has ensured its place as an icon of modern military aviation.
