History of the Original Aircraft

The Eurofighter Typhoon is one of the world's most advanced multirole combat aircraft, developed through a collaborative programme involving Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain. Designed by the Eurofighter GmbH consortium, the aircraft was conceived during the Cold War to replace a variety of ageing fighters while providing exceptional air superiority and multirole capability for European air forces.

Development began in the 1980s, with the first prototype taking to the skies in 1994. Following an extensive flight-test programme, the Typhoon entered operational service in 2003. The EF-200B is the two-seat variant, primarily used for operational conversion training, advanced instruction, and flight testing. Although equipped with a second cockpit, it retains the same combat capability as the single-seat version and can undertake operational missions when required.

Powered by two Eurojet EJ200 afterburning turbofan engines, the Typhoon is capable of sustained supercruise—flying faster than the speed of sound without using afterburners—and can reach speeds exceeding Mach 2. Its delta wing and close-coupled canard configuration provide exceptional agility, while its advanced digital fly-by-wire flight control system delivers outstanding handling throughout the flight envelope.

The Typhoon carries an internal 27mm Mauser BK-27 cannon and can be equipped with a wide range of modern weapons, including AIM-120 AMRAAM, IRIS-T, ASRAAM, Meteor beyond-visual-range missiles, precision-guided bombs, cruise missiles, and anti-ship weapons. Combined with its advanced CAPTOR radar and sophisticated defensive aids suite, the aircraft excels in both air superiority and precision strike missions.

The Eurofighter has participated in numerous NATO operations, including Baltic Air Policing, Operation Ellamy over Libya, air policing missions across Europe, and operations in the Middle East. Continual upgrades have expanded its capabilities, ensuring it remains one of the world's premier fourth-generation-plus fighter aircraft.

Today, the Typhoon continues to serve as the frontline fighter for several European and international air forces, with the twin-seat EF-200B playing a vital role in pilot training, weapons instruction, and operational evaluation while maintaining full combat capability.
