History of the Original Aircraft

The de Havilland Mosquito was one of the most innovative and versatile aircraft of the Second World War. Constructed primarily from wood to conserve strategic materials such as aluminium, it first flew in 1940 and entered Royal Air Force service in 1941. Its lightweight airframe and powerful twin Rolls-Royce Merlin engines gave it exceptional speed, allowing it to outrun many contemporary fighters despite carrying a useful payload.

The Mosquito B Mk.IV was among the first operational bomber variants and quickly established a reputation for fast, accurate precision bombing. Rather than relying on heavy defensive armament, it used its speed and agility to evade enemy fighters while striking high-value targets deep inside occupied Europe. The aircraft participated in numerous daring missions, including low-level raids on Gestapo headquarters, communications centres and industrial facilities.

Alongside the bomber version, the PR Mk.IV photographic reconnaissance variant played a vital role in gathering intelligence for the Allied war effort. Equipped with high-resolution cameras in place of bombs or guns, it flew deep into enemy territory to photograph troop movements, naval installations, airfields and industrial targets. Its outstanding speed and high operating altitude made interception extremely difficult, enabling it to provide invaluable intelligence for planning major operations, including the D-Day landings.

The Mosquito went on to serve in almost every theatre of the war, performing bombing, reconnaissance, night fighting, maritime strike and pathfinder duties. Its remarkable adaptability and outstanding performance earned it the nickname "The Wooden Wonder", and today it is widely regarded as one of the finest and most successful military aircraft ever built.
