The de Havilland Mosquito was one of the most remarkable aircraft designs of the Second World War. Developed by the de Havilland Aircraft Company, it first flew in 1940 and entered RAF service in 1941. Unusually for a frontline combat aircraft, the Mosquito was constructed primarily from wood, earning it the nickname "The Wooden Wonder".

Designed initially as a fast light bomber, the Mosquito's lightweight construction gave it exceptional speed and altitude performance, allowing it to outrun many contemporary enemy fighters. This unique combination of speed, range and versatility allowed it to perform a wide variety of roles throughout the war, including bombing, reconnaissance, fighter interception and precision strike missions.

The Mosquito B Mk.IV was one of the aircraft's most successful bomber variants. Equipped with a large internal bomb bay, it was capable of carrying significant bomb loads while maintaining impressive speed and manoeuvrability. Its ability to conduct accurate attacks at high speed made it particularly valuable for daylight precision bombing missions against important enemy targets.

The PR Mk.IV photographic reconnaissance variant was developed to provide high-speed intelligence gathering over enemy territory. Equipped with cameras in the aircraft's fuselage, it carried out vital reconnaissance missions, often operating at altitudes and speeds that made interception extremely difficult.
