History of the Original Aircraft
The Chengdu J-10A, known by the NATO reporting name "Firebird" and sometimes referred to as the Vigorous Dragon, is a fourth-generation multirole fighter developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group for the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). Designed as China's first indigenous modern multirole fighter, the J-10 marked a significant milestone in the country's aerospace industry and represented a major leap forward in domestic fighter aircraft development.
Development began during the 1980s as China sought to replace ageing aircraft such as the J-7 and Q-5 with a modern fighter capable of air superiority and precision strike missions. After years of research and testing, the J-10 prototype made its maiden flight in 1998, with the aircraft entering operational service in the mid-2000s.
The J-10A features a highly agile delta wing with close-coupled canards, combined with a digital fly-by-wire flight control system that provides excellent manoeuvrability. Powered by a single Saturn AL-31FN afterburning turbofan engine, the aircraft is capable of speeds exceeding Mach 2 while maintaining impressive acceleration and climb performance.
Designed as a true multirole platform, the J-10A can undertake air superiority, interception, ground attack, and precision strike missions. It is equipped with an internal 23mm cannon and can carry a wide range of modern weapons, including PL-8, PL-12, and later PL-15 air-to-air missiles, as well as guided bombs, anti-ship missiles, and external fuel tanks. Its advanced radar and avionics allow it to engage multiple targets in all-weather conditions.
The J-10 has continued to evolve through improved variants such as the J-10B and J-10C, which feature upgraded radar systems, improved engines, infrared search and track sensors, and enhanced electronic warfare capabilities. Despite these newer versions, the J-10A remains an important part of the PLAAF and has helped establish China's reputation as a producer of advanced indigenous combat aircraft.
Today, the Chengdu J-10 family is regarded as one of the cornerstones of China's modern air combat capability and continues to serve alongside more advanced aircraft in frontline operational units.
