History of the Original Vehicle

The M10 IIC Achilles was a British conversion of the American M10 Tank Destroyer, developed to provide Commonwealth forces with a more powerful anti-tank weapon during the Second World War. While the original M10 was armed with a 3-inch (76.2mm) gun, the British replaced it with the formidable Ordnance QF 17-pounder, one of the most effective anti-tank guns of the war.

The conversion was carried out from 1944 onwards, with the new weapon dramatically increasing the vehicle's ability to destroy heavily armoured German tanks, including the Panther and Tiger. The open-topped rotating turret of the M10 was retained, providing excellent visibility for the crew and allowing rapid target acquisition while accommodating the larger British gun.

The Achilles first entered combat during the Normandy Campaign following the D-Day landings and quickly proved its worth during the Allied advance across France, Belgium, the Netherlands and into Germany. Its powerful 17-pounder gun gave British and Commonwealth anti-tank units the capability to engage enemy armour effectively at long range, helping to counter Germany's increasingly formidable tanks.

Serving with the Royal Artillery and anti-tank regiments throughout North-West Europe, the Achilles combined the reliable American M10 chassis with Britain's outstanding anti-tank weapon, creating one of the most capable Allied tank destroyers of the conflict. Many vehicles remained in service after the war and were exported to several countries around the world.

Today, the Achilles is remembered as an excellent example of Anglo-American cooperation during the Second World War. Its combination of mobility, reliability and exceptional firepower earned it a respected place among the most successful Allied armoured fighting vehicles of the war.
