History of the Original Aircraft

The Antonov An-2, known by the NATO reporting name "Colt", is one of the most successful and longest-serving utility aircraft ever built. Designed by the Soviet Antonov Design Bureau shortly after the Second World War, the An-2 was created as a rugged, versatile aircraft capable of operating from remote and unprepared airfields in some of the world's harshest environments.

The prototype first flew in 1947, and the aircraft entered service the following year. Its large biplane configuration provided exceptional lift at low speeds, allowing the An-2 to take off and land in extremely short distances. This capability made it invaluable across the vast territories of the Soviet Union, where conventional runways were often unavailable.

Powered by a single Shvetsov ASh-62IR radial engine, the An-2 proved remarkably reliable and easy to maintain. It was used in a wide variety of roles including cargo transport, passenger services, agricultural spraying, medical evacuation, military transport, parachute training, and aerial observation.

Aircraft equipped with ski landing gear were specifically designed for operations in snow-covered regions, enabling them to land safely on frozen lakes, snowfields, and remote Arctic airstrips. These specialised variants became an essential part of transport operations across Siberia and other northern territories, where conventional wheeled aircraft faced severe limitations during winter months.

The An-2 was produced in enormous numbers not only in the Soviet Union but also under licence in Poland and China. With more than 18,000 aircraft built, it remains the largest single-engine biplane ever placed into production. Many examples continue to fly today, serving civilian operators and military forces around the world more than seventy years after its introduction.

Renowned for its reliability, short take-off and landing performance, and ability to operate in extreme conditions, the Antonov An-2 has earned a lasting place in aviation history as one of the most versatile utility aircraft ever designed.
