History of the Original Vehicle

The Tiger II, officially designated Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf. B and commonly known as the King Tiger or Königstiger, was the heaviest production tank fielded by Germany during the Second World War. Introduced in 1944, it combined the thick, sloped armour of the Panther with the devastating firepower of the legendary 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 gun. Designed to dominate enemy armour at long range, the Tiger II was capable of destroying most Allied tanks well before they were within effective firing distance.

Protected by up to 185mm of frontal armour on the turret and 150mm on the glacis plate, the Tiger II was exceptionally difficult to penetrate from the front. Its powerful Maybach V12 engine provided adequate mobility despite its immense weight of nearly 70 tonnes, although mechanical reliability and high fuel consumption often limited its operational effectiveness. The tank first saw combat during the Battle of Normandy before serving on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, including the Battle of the Bulge and the defence of Germany in 1945.

Although fewer than 500 Tiger IIs were produced, the tank earned a formidable reputation thanks to its combination of heavy armour and outstanding firepower. Today, it is regarded as one of the most iconic armoured fighting vehicles of the Second World War and remains a favourite subject among military historians and scale modellers alike.
