History of the Original Aircraft

The Sukhoi Su-27UB, known by the NATO reporting name "Flanker C", is the twin-seat operational conversion and combat training variant of the legendary Su-27 air superiority fighter. Developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau, the aircraft was designed to provide advanced pilot training while retaining the full combat capability of the single-seat Su-27, allowing instructors and trainee pilots to undertake operational missions together.

The Su-27 programme began during the 1970s in response to the introduction of advanced Western fighters such as the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. Following the first flight of the prototype in 1977, the Su-27 entered service in 1985, with the two-seat Su-27UB following shortly afterwards. Unlike many trainer aircraft, the UB variant retained almost all of the fighter's impressive performance, radar capability, and weapons systems, making it fully combat-capable.

Powered by two Saturn-Lyulka AL-31F afterburning turbofan engines, the Su-27UB is capable of speeds exceeding Mach 2.3 and boasts exceptional range, manoeuvrability, and climb performance. Its aerodynamically efficient blended wing-body design, combined with digital fly-by-wire controls, allows it to perform dramatic high-angle-of-attack manoeuvres, including the famous Pugachev's Cobra, which became synonymous with the Flanker family.

The aircraft is armed with a 30mm GSh-30-1 cannon and can carry an extensive range of air-to-air weapons, including the R-73 (AA-11 Archer) short-range missile and the R-27 (AA-10 Alamo) family of medium-range missiles. This combination, together with its powerful radar and infrared search-and-track (IRST) system, gave the Su-27UB outstanding combat capability despite its primary role as a trainer.

The Su-27UB has served with the Soviet Air Forces, Russian Aerospace Forces, and numerous export customers including China, India, Ukraine, Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Angola. The aircraft also became the foundation for later two-seat multirole developments such as the Su-30 family, which expanded the Flanker's capabilities into strike, maritime attack, and long-range interception.

Renowned for its superb handling, impressive combat performance, and versatility, the Su-27UB remains one of the most respected twin-seat fighter trainers ever produced and continues to serve with several air forces around the world.
