The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX entered service with the Royal Air Force in 1942 as an urgent response to the appearance of the German Focke-Wulf Fw 190. By fitting the proven Spitfire airframe with the more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 engine, engineers produced a fighter capable of matching and surpassing its latest Luftwaffe opponents.

The Mk.IX combined exceptional speed, manoeuvrability and climb performance with the superb handling characteristics that had already made the Spitfire famous. Armed with two 20mm Hispano cannons and either four .303 Browning machine guns or two .50 calibre machine guns, it excelled in both air superiority and ground attack missions.

Throughout the war, Spitfire Mk.IXs served with RAF squadrons and numerous Allied air forces across Europe, the Mediterranean and the Far East. They escorted bomber formations deep into occupied territory, intercepted enemy aircraft and provided vital air cover during the Normandy landings and the Allied advance into Western Europe.

Behind every successful sortie was a dedicated team of RAF groundcrew. Armourers, mechanics, fitters and refuelling crews worked tirelessly to prepare aircraft for combat, often under challenging conditions and against tight operational deadlines. Their expertise ensured the Spitfire remained one of the most reliable and effective fighters of the Second World War, while RAF pilots relied on their skill and commitment to keep their aircraft mission-ready.
