History of the Original Vehicle

The T-62 was a Soviet main battle tank developed as an evolution of the successful T-55 design, introducing improved firepower and battlefield capability while retaining the reliability and simplicity that characterised Soviet armoured vehicles. Entering service in the early 1960s, the T-62 became the world's first production tank to be armed with a smoothbore main gun, marking a significant step forward in armoured warfare technology.

The Mod.1972 variant incorporated several improvements over earlier T-62 versions, including enhanced observation equipment, improved protection measures, and refinements to operational equipment. Later examples were often upgraded with explosive reactive armour (ERA) packages to improve survivability against modern anti-tank weapons. ERA works by using explosive charges within armour modules to disrupt the penetration capability of shaped-charge warheads, providing additional protection without requiring a complete redesign of the vehicle.

Armed with the powerful 115mm U-5TS smoothbore gun, the T-62 offered a significant advantage over earlier Soviet tanks by combining improved armour penetration with a high degree of reliability. Its design also introduced a four-man crew layout and an automatic spent cartridge ejection system, features that influenced later Soviet tank development.

The T-62 saw extensive service with the Soviet Army and was widely exported to Warsaw Pact nations and allied countries. It participated in numerous conflicts, including the Yom Kippur War, the Soviet–Afghan War, and various Middle Eastern conflicts. Although gradually replaced by newer designs such as the T-72 and T-80, upgraded T-62 variants continue to serve in some countries today, demonstrating the durability and adaptability of Soviet armoured engineering.
