History of the Original Vehicle

The 2K12 Kub, known by NATO reporting name SA-6 "Gainful", was one of the Soviet Union's most successful mobile surface-to-air missile systems of the Cold War. Developed during the 1960s, it was designed to provide Soviet armoured formations with a mobile air defence capability capable of protecting frontline units from low and medium-altitude aircraft. Unlike earlier systems that relied heavily on fixed installations, the Kub could move with advancing armoured forces and rapidly engage enemy aircraft in contested environments.

The system consisted of several specialised vehicles, including the 2P25 transporter-erector-launcher (TEL) carrying three ready-to-fire missiles and the 1S91 radar and guidance vehicle responsible for target detection and missile control. The missile itself, designated the 3M9, used radar guidance to intercept aircraft at considerable distances and provided a significant threat to helicopters and strike aircraft operating near the battlefield.

The SA-6 gained worldwide attention during the Yom Kippur War of 1973, when Egyptian and Syrian forces used the system with great effectiveness against Israeli aircraft. Its mobility, low radar signature, and advanced guidance system surprised many Western analysts and forced major changes in aircraft tactics and electronic warfare development. The system was also widely exported to Warsaw Pact nations and Soviet-aligned countries, seeing service across numerous conflicts throughout the late twentieth century.

Although largely replaced by newer missile systems, the 2K12 Kub remains an iconic Cold War weapon system. Its impact on modern air defence development and its distinctive tracked launcher design have made it a popular subject among military historians and scale modellers.
