History of the Original Aircraft

The Dassault Mirage 2000C is one of the most successful European fighter aircraft of the modern era. Developed by Dassault Aviation during the 1970s, it was designed as a lightweight, highly manoeuvrable interceptor and multirole fighter to replace the ageing Mirage III fleet of the French Air and Space Force.

The Mirage 2000 programme was officially launched in 1975, with the prototype making its maiden flight on 10 March 1978. Unlike many contemporary fighters that adopted swept or variable-geometry wings, Dassault returned to the proven tailless delta-wing layout that had made the Mirage III famous. Advances in digital fly-by-wire flight controls overcame the traditional handling limitations of delta-wing aircraft, giving the Mirage 2000 exceptional agility and stability across its flight envelope.

The Mirage 2000C entered operational service in 1984 as the dedicated air-defence variant. Powered by a single SNECMA M53-P2 afterburning turbofan, it was capable of speeds exceeding Mach 2.2 and rapid climb performance, making it highly effective in the interceptor role. Its advanced radar and avionics enabled it to detect and engage multiple airborne threats in all weather conditions.

Armed with two 30mm DEFA 554 revolver cannons, the Mirage 2000C could also carry a variety of air-to-air missiles, including the Matra Super 530D for beyond-visual-range engagements and the highly manoeuvrable Matra Magic II for close-range combat. This combination gave the aircraft an excellent balance of speed, firepower, and agility.

Throughout its service life, the Mirage 2000C has participated in numerous international operations, including missions over the Balkans, Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, and the Baltic Air Policing programme. The aircraft has also been exported to several countries, earning a reputation for reliability, ease of maintenance, and outstanding combat performance.

Although gradually replaced in French service by the Dassault Rafale, the Mirage 2000 remains in operational use with several air forces around the world. Its elegant design, advanced fly-by-wire technology, and proven combat record have secured its place as one of the most iconic European fighter aircraft ever built.
