History of the Original Vehicle

The M4A2 Sherman was one of the most widely used variants of the famous American M4 Sherman medium tank and played a significant role in the re-equipment of Allied armoured forces during the Second World War. Powered by the reliable General Motors 6046 diesel engine, the M4A2 was produced primarily for Allied nations, including the United Kingdom, Soviet Union, and Free French forces.

The 2nd Armoured Division (2e Division Blindée), commanded by General Philippe Leclerc, was equipped with American-made Sherman tanks as part of the Allied effort to rebuild French armoured forces following the liberation of North Africa. The division became one of the most famous French military formations of the war and played a key role in the liberation of France in 1944.

M4A2 Shermans operated by the Division Leclerc featured a combination of American engineering and distinctive French markings. The tanks were used extensively during the liberation of Paris in August 1944, where the division achieved international recognition, before continuing operations across France, Belgium, and into Germany. Their reliability, ease of maintenance, and adaptability made them ideal for the rapidly advancing Allied armies.

Although the Sherman was outmatched in armour and firepower by some heavier German tanks, its excellent mobility, mechanical reliability, and availability in large numbers made it one of the most important armoured vehicles of the war. The M4A2 Shermans of the Division Leclerc remain a symbol of the rebirth of French armoured forces and their contribution to the Allied victory in Europe.
