The M4 Sherman was the principal medium tank used by the United States and many Allied nations during the Second World War. Introduced in 1942, it combined reliability, ease of production and mechanical simplicity, allowing it to be manufactured in vast numbers and deployed across every major theatre of the conflict.

The early production M4 featured a welded hull, Continental R975 radial engine and the dependable 75mm M3 gun, which was effective against enemy armour while also providing excellent high-explosive firepower for supporting infantry. Although later German tanks such as the Panther and Tiger possessed heavier armour and more powerful guns, the Sherman compensated through reliability, mobility and superior logistical support.

Early production Shermans first entered combat in the North African Campaign, where they quickly proved superior to many of the tanks then fielded by Axis forces. They later served during the invasions of Sicily and Italy, before becoming the backbone of Allied armoured divisions during the Normandy Campaign, the liberation of Western Europe and the final advance into Germany.

More than 49,000 Sherman tanks of all variants were produced, making it one of the most widely manufactured tanks in history. The vehicle served not only with American forces but also with British, Canadian, Free French, Polish and numerous other Allied armies through the Lend-Lease programme.

Renowned for its reliability and versatility, the Sherman formed the basis for a wide range of specialised vehicles, including recovery tanks, flamethrowers, mine-clearing tanks and self-propelled artillery. Its widespread use and lasting influence on armoured warfare have made it one of the most famous and recognisable tanks ever built.
