History of the Original Vehicle
The M2A2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle is one of the most recognisable armoured vehicles of the modern United States Army. Developed during the Cold War to provide armoured infantry units with greater mobility, protection, and firepower, the Bradley was designed to operate alongside the M1 Abrams main battle tank on the modern battlefield. It replaced the older M113 armoured personnel carrier by offering significantly improved combat capabilities while still retaining the ability to transport infantry troops.
The original Bradley entered service in the early 1980s, but lessons learned from military exercises and evolving battlefield threats led to the development of the M2A2 upgrade. Introduced in the late 1980s, the M2A2 featured improved armour protection, enhanced survivability systems, and upgraded suspension components to handle the additional weight. The vehicle's armament consists of a powerful 25mm M242 Bushmaster chain gun, a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun, and a TOW anti-tank missile system, allowing it to engage enemy infantry, light vehicles, and heavily armoured threats.
The M2A2 Bradley saw extensive combat service during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, where it proved highly effective against Iraqi armoured forces and destroyed more enemy vehicles than many Allied tanks during the conflict. It was also heavily used during operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, where it demonstrated its versatility in conventional and asymmetric warfare environments.
Combining troop-carrying capability with substantial firepower and protection, the Bradley became a key component of U.S. mechanised infantry formations. Although developed during the Cold War, continuous upgrades have allowed the platform to remain an important part of American armoured warfare for decades.
