History of the Original Vehicle

The M1134 Stryker Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) Vehicle is a specialised variant of the Stryker family of eight-wheeled armoured vehicles, designed to provide mobile anti-tank firepower for U.S. Army infantry formations. Developed as part of the Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) concept, the M1134 provides long-range precision anti-armour capability while maintaining the mobility and protection of the Stryker platform. (scalehobbyist.com)

The Stryker family was developed in the late 1990s and early 2000s as a highly mobile armoured vehicle designed to bridge the gap between heavy armoured forces and lighter infantry units. Based on the Canadian LAV III platform, the Stryker introduced improved protection, digital communications, and rapid deployment capability.

The M1134 variant was created to give Stryker Brigade units an organic anti-tank capability. Rather than relying entirely on attached armoured units or infantry anti-tank teams, the M1134 allows commanders to deploy a dedicated vehicle capable of engaging enemy armour from protected positions.

The vehicle’s primary weapon system is the TOW anti-tank guided missile launcher, mounted on an elevated mast. The launcher carries two ready-to-fire missiles and can engage armoured targets at extended ranges while allowing the crew to remain protected inside the vehicle. (1001hobbies.co.uk)

The elevated launcher design provides several tactical advantages. By raising the missile system above the vehicle roofline, crews can use terrain features, walls, and other cover while maintaining visibility over obstacles. This allows the M1134 to engage targets while reducing exposure to enemy fire.

The Stryker platform is powered by a diesel engine and features an eight-wheel drive system, providing excellent mobility across varied terrain. Its wheeled design allows rapid movement over roads while still maintaining off-road capability, making it particularly suited to expeditionary operations.

Protection on the M1134 includes armoured hull construction designed to defend against small arms fire, artillery fragments, and battlefield hazards. Additional armour packages and upgrades have been introduced throughout the Stryker family’s service life to improve survivability against modern threats.

The M1134 entered service with the U.S. Army during the early 2000s and has remained an important component of Stryker Brigade Combat Teams. It has been deployed in overseas operations, including missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, where mobility, reconnaissance, and precision anti-armour capability were essential.

Although designed primarily to counter enemy armoured vehicles, the M1134’s flexibility allows it to support a wide range of battlefield missions. Its combination of mobility, protection, and missile capability makes it one of the most important specialised variants within the Stryker family.

For modellers, the M1134 offers a distinctive modern armour subject with its large missile launcher, eight-wheel configuration, and detailed contemporary equipment. It is an excellent choice for modern U.S. military displays and realistic operational dioramas.
