History of the Original Vehicle

The M1130 Stryker Command Vehicle (CV) is a specialised command-and-control variant of the Stryker family of eight-wheeled armoured vehicles, designed to provide commanders with a mobile battlefield headquarters capable of operating alongside fast-moving infantry and armoured units.

The Stryker programme was developed during the late 1990s and early 2000s as part of the U.S. Army’s effort to create a highly mobile force that could deploy quickly while maintaining a level of protection and battlefield awareness between light infantry and heavy armoured formations.

Based on the LAV III armoured vehicle platform, the Stryker family introduced a range of specialised variants designed for different battlefield roles. The M1130 was developed specifically to provide commanders with secure communications, digital battlefield management systems, and the ability to coordinate operations while remaining protected and mobile.

The command vehicle differs from standard Stryker variants by carrying additional communication equipment, workstations, and systems designed to collect and distribute battlefield information. This allows commanders to monitor friendly and enemy movements, coordinate units, and make decisions without relying on stationary command posts.

The M1130 is equipped with advanced digital systems that allow it to connect with other military units and command networks. Its role is not to engage enemy forces directly but to provide the information and coordination necessary for successful operations.

The Stryker platform’s eight-wheel configuration provides excellent strategic and tactical mobility. Unlike tracked vehicles, the wheeled design allows rapid movement over roads while still maintaining useful off-road capability. This made the Stryker particularly suited to expeditionary operations where speed and deployability were essential.

Protection on the M1130 includes an armoured hull designed to protect the crew from small arms fire, artillery fragments, and battlefield hazards. Additional armour packages have been introduced throughout the Stryker family’s service life to improve survivability against evolving threats.

The M1130 entered service with the U.S. Army in the early 2000s as part of the Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) structure. These units were designed around networked warfare, combining mobility, communications, and rapid deployment capability.

Stryker vehicles have seen extensive operational service, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, where their mobility and communication capabilities proved valuable in complex combat environments. The M1130 played an important role by allowing commanders to maintain situational awareness while operating close to frontline units.

Although lightly armed compared with tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, the M1130’s value comes from its ability to coordinate battlefield operations. Modern warfare increasingly depends on information sharing and rapid decision-making, making command vehicles essential components of military formations.

The M1130 Stryker Command Vehicle remains an important part of the Stryker family and represents the evolution of modern armoured warfare, where communication, intelligence, and battlefield networking are as important as traditional firepower.

For modellers, the M1130 provides a unique modern military subject with its distinctive equipment layout, eight-wheel configuration, and command role. It is an excellent addition to contemporary U.S. Army displays and realistic modern conflict dioramas.
