History of the Original Vehicle

The Sd.Kfz.2 Kettenkraftrad, commonly known as the Kettenkrad, was one of the most unusual and versatile vehicles used by the German military during the Second World War. Originally developed as a lightweight tracked vehicle for airborne troops, it combined the compact size of a motorcycle with the mobility of a tracked vehicle, allowing it to operate effectively across difficult terrain.

Powered by an Opel Olympia engine, the Kettenkrad featured a motorcycle-style front wheel for steering and tracked propulsion for improved traction. It was used for a wide range of tasks including towing aircraft, transporting communications equipment, laying cable, carrying supplies and moving personnel in areas where conventional vehicles struggled.

The infantry cart trailer increased the Kettenkrad's usefulness by allowing it to carry additional equipment, ammunition and supplies. Its small size and excellent off-road capability made it particularly valuable on the Eastern Front, where muddy conditions and rough terrain often limited the movement of larger vehicles.

The kit also includes the Goliath tracked demolition vehicle, a remote-controlled explosive carrier designed to destroy enemy positions, fortifications and armoured vehicles. Controlled by a cable connection, the Goliath carried a large explosive charge that could be directed towards its target before being detonated. Although vulnerable to enemy fire and difficult terrain, it represented an early attempt at battlefield remote-control technology.

Both vehicles saw service across multiple theatres of the war, including the Eastern Front, Western Europe and Italy. While neither was a frontline combat vehicle in the traditional sense, both played important specialist roles supporting German military operations.

Today, the Kettenkrad and Goliath remain among the most recognisable and unusual vehicles of the Second World War, making them popular subjects for military historians, collectors and scale modellers.
