History of the Original Aircraft

The Junkers Ju 87A Stuka was the first production version of one of the most recognisable aircraft of the Second World War. Designed by Junkers Flugzeug- und Motorenwerke, the Ju 87 was developed during the mid-1930s as a dedicated dive bomber capable of delivering highly accurate attacks against enemy fortifications, bridges, vehicles, and troop concentrations.

The prototype first flew in 1935, and the Ju 87A entered Luftwaffe service in 1937. It was powered by a Junkers Jumo 210 inverted V-12 engine and featured the aircraft's trademark inverted gull wings, fixed spatted landing gear, and large dive brakes beneath the wings. These features allowed pilots to perform steep dive attacks with remarkable precision while maintaining stability throughout the manoeuvre.

The Ju 87A first saw combat during the Spanish Civil War, where it was operated by the German Condor Legion. Combat experience gained in Spain helped refine dive-bombing tactics and proved the aircraft's effectiveness in close air support and precision strike roles. Lessons learned directly influenced later and more capable Stuka variants.

Armed with two forward-firing 7.92mm MG 17 machine guns and a flexible rear-mounted MG 15 for defence, the Ju 87A typically carried a 250 kg bomb beneath the fuselage along with smaller bombs under the wings. One of its most famous features was the "Jericho Trumpet", a siren fitted to the landing gear that produced a terrifying wailing sound during dive attacks, intended to intimidate enemy troops.

Although the Ju 87A was soon replaced by the more powerful Ju 87B before the outbreak of the Second World War, it played an important role in developing Germany's doctrine of close air support and precision bombing. The Stuka family would later become synonymous with the early Blitzkrieg campaigns in Poland, France, and the Low Countries.

Today, the Ju 87 remains one of the most iconic military aircraft ever built, and the early Ju 87A offers a fascinating insight into the origins of one of history's most famous dive bombers.
