History of the Original Vehicle

The Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf. B, more commonly known as the King Tiger or Königstiger, represented the pinnacle of German heavy tank development during the Second World War. Entering service in 1944, it combined the formidable firepower of the 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 gun with exceptionally thick, sloped armour, making it one of the most powerful tanks fielded by any nation during the conflict. Designed to dominate enemy armour at long range, the King Tiger was capable of destroying Allied tanks well before they could effectively engage it.

The earliest production vehicles were fitted with the distinctive Porsche-designed turret. Despite its name, these turrets were manufactured by Krupp and were originally intended for Porsche's proposed Tiger II chassis. Their rounded front profile gave the tank a unique appearance, although it also created a vulnerable shot trap beneath the gun mantlet, where incoming rounds could be deflected into the thinner hull roof. This design issue led to the introduction of the later Henschel turret, but the Porsche turret remains one of the most recognisable variants of the King Tiger.

Although mechanically complex and demanding to maintain, the King Tiger proved devastating when employed in defensive positions. It fought on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, taking part in battles such as Normandy, the Ardennes Offensive, and the defence of Germany during the final months of the war. Today, the King Tiger with Porsche turret remains one of the most iconic and sought-after subjects in military history and scale modelling.
