The 5cm Panzerabwehrkanone 38 (Pak38) was a German anti-tank gun introduced in 1940 to replace the smaller 3.7cm Pak36. Developed by Rheinmetall, it was designed to provide German infantry units with a more powerful weapon capable of defeating increasingly well-armoured enemy tanks encountered during the Second World War.

Armed with a high-velocity 50mm gun, the Pak38 proved highly effective during the early and middle stages of the war. It was capable of penetrating the armour of many British, American and Soviet tanks at typical combat ranges, particularly when firing armour-piercing ammunition. As heavier Allied tanks entered service, specialised tungsten-core ammunition helped extend the weapon's effectiveness against more heavily protected targets.

The Pak38 was relatively lightweight for its class, allowing it to be towed by light vehicles or moved short distances by its crew when repositioning on the battlefield. Its low profile made it easier to conceal in defensive positions, where it was often employed in ambushes against advancing enemy armour.

The gun saw widespread service on every major front, including North Africa, the Eastern Front, Italy and Western Europe. It played a key role in German defensive tactics, supporting infantry formations and providing mobile anti-tank protection until it was gradually superseded by the larger and more powerful 7.5cm Pak40.

Although eventually outclassed by the increasing armour of late-war Allied tanks, the Pak38 remained an important and reliable weapon throughout much of the conflict. Today, it is recognised as one of Germany's most successful medium anti-tank guns and an important step in the evolution of anti-armour warfare.
