The 2cm Flakvierling 38 was one of Germany's most effective and widely used light anti-aircraft weapons during the Second World War. Introduced in 1940, it combined four 20mm FlaK 38 autocannons on a single mounting, dramatically increasing its rate of fire and making it highly effective against low-flying aircraft.

Capable of firing up to 1,800 rounds per minute in combined cyclic fire, the Flakvierling 38 created a dense curtain of projectiles that posed a serious threat to Allied fighter-bombers and ground attack aircraft. The weapon was crew-operated, with each gun fed from detachable box magazines that required frequent reloading during sustained engagements.

Although designed primarily for air defence, the Flakvierling 38 also proved extremely effective against lightly armoured vehicles, infantry positions and soft-skinned transport. Its high rate of fire made it a versatile battlefield weapon, and it was often employed in a ground support role when enemy aircraft were not present.

The Flakvierling served on every major front of the war, including North Africa, the Eastern Front, Italy and Western Europe. It was mounted on towed trailers, fixed defensive positions, railway wagons, naval vessels and numerous self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicles such as the Sd.Kfz.7/1 half-track and later the Wirbelwind anti-aircraft tank.

By the end of the war, the Flakvierling 38 had become one of the most recognisable German anti-aircraft weapons. Its combination of mobility, firepower and versatility ensured it remained in widespread use throughout the conflict, earning a reputation as one of the Wehrmacht's most effective light air defence systems.
