History of the Original Aircraft

The Junkers Ju 87D-3 Stuka was one of the most recognisable aircraft of the Second World War and became a symbol of Germany's early Blitzkrieg campaigns. Designed as a dedicated dive bomber, the Stuka was developed to provide extremely accurate attacks against ground targets, including enemy positions, vehicles, artillery, and fortifications.

The Ju 87 first flew in 1935 and introduced several innovative features for precision bombing, including its distinctive inverted gull wings, fixed landing gear, and dive brakes that allowed pilots to perform steep bombing attacks with remarkable accuracy. The aircraft's design enabled it to dive almost vertically toward targets before releasing its bomb and safely recovering from the attack.

The Ju 87D series introduced significant improvements over earlier variants, including a more powerful Junkers Jumo 211 engine, improved aerodynamics, increased fuel capacity, and greater payload capability. The D-3 variant was specifically designed for close air support and was fitted with additional armour protection for operations closer to the battlefield.

Armed with two forward-firing machine guns and capable of carrying a large bomb load, the Ju 87D-3 was used extensively on the Eastern Front and in Mediterranean operations. It supported German ground forces by attacking defensive positions, supply routes, and armoured formations.

Although highly effective during the early years of the war, the Stuka's slow speed and limited defensive capability made it increasingly vulnerable as Allied air superiority improved. By the later stages of the conflict, many Ju 87 units were replaced or supplemented by faster fighter-bombers.

Despite its limitations, the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka remains one of the most famous aircraft in military history. Its distinctive appearance, battlefield role, and association with early German victories have made it an enduring subject among aviation historians and scale modellers.
