History of the Original Aircraft

The de Havilland Mosquito was one of the most versatile and successful aircraft of the Second World War. Constructed primarily from wood to conserve valuable strategic materials, it first flew in 1940 and entered Royal Air Force service the following year. Its lightweight construction, combined with two powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, gave it exceptional speed and range, earning it the famous nickname "The Wooden Wonder."

The Mosquito FB Mk.VI became the RAF's principal fighter-bomber variant and proved capable of carrying out an extraordinary variety of missions. Armed with four 20mm Hispano cannons and four .303 Browning machine guns in the nose, it could also carry bombs or rockets beneath its wings. The FB Mk.VI excelled in low-level precision strikes, anti-shipping operations, close air support and attacks against strategic targets throughout occupied Europe.

The Mosquito NF Mk.II was developed as a dedicated night fighter at a time when Britain faced sustained nocturnal bombing raids. Equipped with airborne interception radar housed in a distinctive nose installation, the NF Mk.II enabled RAF crews to detect and intercept enemy bombers in complete darkness. It played a vital role in defending British cities and later accompanied bomber formations on offensive operations over Europe.

Throughout the war, Mosquito crews demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in every theatre of operations. Whether conducting daring low-level raids, intercepting enemy aircraft at night, gathering reconnaissance photographs or carrying out precision bombing missions, the Mosquito consistently outperformed expectations and became one of the RAF's most respected aircraft.

Today, the de Havilland Mosquito is widely regarded as one of the finest aircraft ever built. Its innovative design, remarkable versatility and outstanding combat record have secured its place among the greatest military aircraft in aviation history.
